SELF HELP GROUP

MEWT realized that the effective way to tackle poverty and to enable communities to improve the quality of life is through social mobilization of disadvantaged people, especially into self-help groups. The whole idea is to encourage community participation, as a sustainable community development requires the active participation of the entire community.

Focus of the self-help group will be to develop the capacity of its members, and to organize them, so that they can deal with socio-political and socio-economic issues that affect their lives. The group will encourage people in rural areas to form a co-operative and become financially self-independent.

In the long run this practice will give financial security to every individual and help them build up their confidence level as a result of constant interaction between the members of the co-operative. The very thought of the availability of work will encourage people to become active within the framework of options available to them.

Self-help groups will be set up to provide enough job opportunities for the unemployed. Joint discussions at regular group meetings will help each individual to recognize their difficulties, to deal with them and to overcome them. Self help group can make it easier for its members to cope with social and economical burdens.

As per the plans of the trust, the self-help group will be divided into two segments:

Bee Farming
In India beekeeping has been mainly forest based. Several natural plant species mainly flowers provide nectar and pollen to honey bees. Thus, the raw material for production of honey is available free from nature. Bee hives neither demand additional land space nor do they compete with agriculture or animal husbandry for any input. For this purpose MEWT is acquiring lands to cultivate flowers to provide nectar for the bees and sell these flowers commercially.

The workers need only to spare a few hours in a week to look after the bee colonies all while working on the flowers. Beekeeping is therefore ideally suited to them as a part-time occupation. It constitutes a resource of sustainable income generation to the group. Bee products will be marketed and sold to the pharmaceutical, confectionery and food industries and directly to consumers.

Chutney/Pickle Processing
The Cooperative will use locally available resources to create a variety of fruit and vegetable chutneys, market and sell the products both locally and internationally. These products will include dry or wet chutney, pickle, dry vegetable and much more that can be processed from readily available fruits. These fruits currently lack proper preservation and end up as waste. The cooperative will have very good tie-up arrangements so that all what it produces is marketed through its own outlets and the profits will be shared among its members thus generating more income for the group.

The setting up of these self- help groups will generate employment opportunities not only for the male section of the society but also females. These groups will enable people to grow their savings and provide them with a community platform from where they can become active in village affairs and also act collectively on different social and economic issues. The earnings from the same will be distributed among the members of the co-operative equally. Therefore, it will extend financial services to the poor, and contribute to the alleviation of rural poverty. The trust will time and again ensure the smooth running of these self help groups.
